Roof Replacement at Doylestown Library

Updated: Starting the week of October 15, contractors will begin the process of replacing the metal roof at the Doylestown District Center Library. Construction is projected to continue through mid-December. This project is supported in part through a grant from the Office of Commonwealth Libraries, Pennsylvania Department of Education, with funds provided from the Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund.

The library will remain open during this time. However, between October 21 and November 15, the library will have a two week period of reduced hours. During this period, the library will be closed during the day and open to the public in the evening from 5 to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The library will be closed on Friday. Weekend hours will not be reduced, and the library will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

This construction project is subject to weather-related delays, which could affect the timeline for completion and could shift the dates during which the library will have reduced hours. Please check our website for updates regarding this project.

During this period of reduced hours, the library will extend due dates on materials borrowed by patrons.

This compact version in the wildly popular Ticket to Ride series features all new content. Instead of the usual trains, this version focuses on the iconic NYC taxi cabs. Ages 8+ – 2-4 players – 10-15 minute playing time – great for families.

If you liked The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie, then try out Give Me Some Truth by Eric Gansworth

  • Give Me Some Truth follows two Native American teens who are struggling to find their identity both on and off the reservation. Carson thinks his best chance to make his mark is by winning the local Battle of the Bands. Of course, it might help if he actually has a band first. Maggi has just moved back to the reservation and wants to create art outside of the traditional artwork her family sells to tourists. Taking place in 1980, Give Me Some Truth explores identity, social justice, first love, political, and pop culture, as well as two teens trying to reconcile the life they have with the life they want.
    • Book Notes: This book has strong ties to John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and the Beatles. There’s a lot of musical influence within the storyline. Like The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Gansworth’s novel introduces readers to tough topics that might turn off readers looking for a light-hearted read. With that said, this is definitely one to try out for music lovers, Alexie lovers, and even John Green fans!

Toddler Storytime

Toddler storytime is more than reading and playing. It is a special time for your child to begin a lifetime of learning. Young children can understand words long before the can say them. Remembering that there are different developmental timelines or milestones for toddlers is important. These milestones influence the understanding and meaning of words to each child at different times.

Many toddlers, as young as 18 months of age, can understand the meaning of objects and words. Along with the skill of comprehension, toddlers are developing and refining their fine motor skills. Combining these two skills and adding them to an interactive book, such as pop-ups, buttons, flaps, and 3-D elements, can increase a toddler’s wish to read. Storytimes introduce and reinforce many different types of books, stories, and authors.

Read Along with Hoopla

Did you know that Hoopla offers read-along books to help your child develop their reading skills?

Follow along as a professional narrator reads your child a story. Each word is highlighted as it is read, so your child can read along. Pages turn automatically, or you can toggle the settings to pause between pages and explore the illustrations with your child!

When you log into Hoopla with your Bucks County library card, you’ll find thousands of read-along titles including fiction and nonfiction picture books and leveled readers. Check out beloved characters like Pete the Cat, Fancy Nancy, and Curious George, plus your favorite Disney and Marvel heroes and even classics like Caps for Sale and Freight Train.

Lynda.com Upgrading to LinkedIn Learning

On Tuesday, September 24, Lynda.com will become LinkedIn Learning. With the upgrade, you’ll have access to over 14,500 courses, including in six other languages beyond English: French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Mandarin, and Portuguese.

You will need your library card number and PIN to access the resource. In addition, you will need to have a LinkedIn profile.

Your first name, last name, and an email address are the only requirements to create a LinkedIn profile. You’ll have the same controls that all LinkedIn members do, including the ability to set your profile’s public visibility off as soon as you sign up.
