Apply online or in person at any of our seven branches in Bensalem, Doylestown, Langhorne, Levittown, Yardley-Makefield, Perkasie, and Quakertown.
- We ask for a minimum commitment of two hours per week for twelve weeks.
- You must be 12 or older. If you are 17 or younger, your parents or guardians must fill out a permission form. If you are younger than 12, you can volunteer together with an adult. Teens are eligible for all volunteer positions.
- Adult volunteers age 18 and older must pass background checks. The library pays for any costs associated with background checking. The library does not accept court-ordered volunteers.

Work with the Collection
Book Sale Assistant
Using lists provided by the library, pull books and other items from the shelves for removal from the collection. Delete the materials using the library’s catalog software. Remove all library markings. Evaluate for salability. Sort and price the items. Monitor sales, restocking and removing items as needed. Pull items that are unlikely to sell or have not sold. Pack up items for recycling or disposal.
Physical Demands: Occasionally lift boxes up to 25 lbs. and push carts up to 75 lbs. Frequently bend, stoop, crouch, and reach above and below shoulders. Repetitive hand use grasping books. Continuously stand and walk for up to two hours.
Qualifications: Enjoys independent work and hands-on activities. Pays attention to detail. Knowledge of books and retail. Ability to sort books and other library materials into alphabetical or Dewey Decimal order.
Building Caregiver
Clean smudges from tables, walls, windows, doors, and other surfaces. Refresh toys in the children’s area. Pick up litter on floors and shelving units. Dust shelves and mobile shelving tops. Water plants. Straighten furniture. Wipe down books, DVDs, CDs, and toys. Box items for recycling or disposal. Break down and stack boxes for recycling.
Qualifications: Enjoys independent work and hands-on activities.

Collection Care Assistant
Shelve returning bestsellers, DVDs, and games. Straighten shelves. Fill displays. Check returned DVD sets and other audio-visuals to make sure all pieces are in the package and in good shape. Refresh DVDs using a buffing machine. Unpack incoming new materials and check packing slips against invoices. Check in the items using the library’s catalog software and sort new materials onto carts. Push carts onto the public floor for display and shelving.

Grounds Caregiver
Water and trim plants and shrubs. Weed and apply mulch. Rake leaves. Sweep sidewalks. Pick up litter. Fill outside fountains and remove debris.
The Grounds Caregiver works outdoors seasonally from early spring to late fall.
Qualifications: Enjoys independent work and hands-on activities. Physical strength. Manual dexterity. Knowledge of gardening and garden tools.

Holds Processor
Using lists provided by the library, find materials on the shelves that customers have requested. Pull materials from the shelves. Shelve materials for pickup. Clear shelves of expired holds.

Empty and sort materials from indoor and outdoor book drops. Shelve books and other library materials. Search for missing items.

Work with Patrons
Share information about the library at places you know or reach out and make new contacts using lists provided by the library. Drop off library promotional materials to local businesses, government offices, and non-profits. Input information about library programs into local online media calendars. Make phone calls to organizations to find out if they would be interested in receiving information or scheduling a library visit. Share library stories and information on social media, like Facebook and Instagram. Qualifications: Knowledge of library services, catalog, and website. Enjoys talking with and helping others. Offer craft guidance and support to patrons, assist them with projects, and help them use equipment in the Cut Corner Studio. We ask for a minimum commitment of two hours per week for twelve weeks. You must be 18 or older. If you are 17 or younger, you can volunteer together with an adult that has a Cut Corner Studio Badge. Teens are eligible for all volunteer positions. Note: This volunteer position is only available at the Bensalem and Quakertown branches. Qualifications: Enjoys talking with and helping others. Extensive skills in variety of types of making. Must fulfill all Cut Corner Studio equipment basic training, and learn how to operate a variety of equipment. Physical Demands: Continuously stand and walk for up to two hours. Work one-on-one with adult library users. Help with computer reservations, printing, and scanning. Help with office productivity software and internet access, including e-mail, social media, online forms, and job applications. Show people how to use the library catalog, My Account, and online library resources. Troubleshoot library equipment. Clean screens, keyboards, and other public equipment. Computer Coaches work a regular schedule each week during advertised two-hour shifts. Sessions are walk-in and last between 15 minutes and an hour. Qualifications: Enjoys talking with and helping others. Knowledge of library services, catalog, and website. Knowledge of computer software and the internet. Skill in teaching others. Ability to adapt teaching style to people at all levels. Ability to operate computer equipment. Physical Demands: Continuously sit, stand, and walk for up to two hours. Help people use the self-check machines and look up items in the catalog. Hand out library card applications, bookmarks, brochures, surveys, and give-a-ways. During down times, shelve and straighten materials and fill book displays near the entryway. Physical Demands: Continuously stand and walk for up to two hours. Special Events Assistant
Work with Children
Listen to children practice reading to help them gain confidence and hone their literacy skills. Guide one-on-one or small-group activities, such as crafts, puzzles, flannel stories, and games. Promote upcoming library programs and library resources by completing Badge Squad activities alongside patrons, demonstrating and sharing e-resources, etc. Book Buddies work a regular schedule each week during advertised two-hour shifts. This position is ideal for ages 12-17, or for groups, such as Girl Scout troops. Handlers with reading dogs are also welcome and invited to participate in the Book Buddy program. Background check is required for adults 18 and older. Physical Demands: Continuously sit, stand, and walk for up to two hours. Qualifications: Enjoys talking with and helping others. Work closely with a Children’s Librarian or Youth Services/Programming Assistant to deliver story times and other programs to pre-school children and their families. Help set up and clean up the room for story times and drop-in play times. Arrange furniture and supplies or equipment. Locate and pull materials for display. Help lead and participate in stories, songs, and crafts. Welcome families as they arrive. Monitor the room during drop-in playtimes and stay-and-play times after story times. Prep craft materials. Staff craft or activities tables. Early Learning Assistants are most needed in the mornings during the week from 9 a.m.-to 1 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Physical Demands: Continuously stand and walk for up to two hours.
