Come to the library and share your unique talents with others. We are looking for dedicated reliable volunteers to join our team. Our goal is to match your interests to the right opportunity for you!
Apply online or in person at any of our seven branches in Bensalem, Doylestown, Langhorne, Levittown, Yardley-Makefield, Perkasie, and Quakertown.
- We ask for a minimum commitment of two hours per week for twelve weeks.
- You must be 12 or older. If you are 17 or younger, your parents or guardians must fill out a permission form. If you are younger than 12, you can volunteer together with an adult. Teens are eligible for all volunteer positions.
- Adult volunteers age 18 and older must pass background checks. The library pays for any costs associated with background checking. The library does not accept court-ordered volunteers.

Work with the Collection
Building Caregiver
Clean smudges from tables, walls, windows, doors, and other surfaces. Refresh toys in the children’s area. Pick up litter on floors and shelving units. Dust shelves and mobile shelving tops. Water plants. Straighten furniture. Wipe down books, DVDs, CDs, and toys. Box items for recycling or disposal. Break down and stack boxes for recycling.
Qualifications: Enjoys independent work and hands-on activities.
Physical Demands: Frequently bend, stoop, crouch, and reach above and below shoulders. Continuously stand and walk for up to two hours.
Collection Care Assistant
Shelve returning bestsellers, DVDs, and games. Straighten shelves. Fill displays. Check returned DVD sets and other audio-visuals to make sure all pieces are in the package and in good shape. Refresh DVDs using a buffing machine. Unpack incoming new materials and check packing slips against invoices. Check in the items using the library’s catalog software and sort new materials onto carts. Push carts onto the public floor for display and shelving.
Physical Demands: Occasionally lift boxes up to 25 lbs. and push carts up to 75 lbs. Frequently bend, stoop, crouch, and reach above and below shoulders. Repetitive hand use grasping books. Continuously stand and walk for up to two hours.
Qualifications: Enjoys independent work and hands-on activities. Pays attention to detail. Ability to sort books and other library materials into alphabetical or Dewey Decimal order.
Grounds Caregiver
Water and trim plants and shrubs. Weed and apply mulch. Rake leaves. Sweep sidewalks. Pick up litter. Fill outside fountains and remove debris.
The Grounds Caregiver works outdoors seasonally from early spring to late fall.
Qualifications: Enjoys independent work and hands-on activities. Physical strength. Manual dexterity. Knowledge of gardening and garden tools.

Holds Processor
Using lists provided by the library, find materials on the shelves that customers have requested. Pull materials from the shelves. Shelve materials for pickup. Clear shelves of expired holds.

Empty and sort materials from indoor and outdoor book drops. Shelve books and other library materials. Search for missing items.

Work with Patrons
Take the lead in hosting a book club discussion group held every other month for one year. Identify engaging and diverse books based on a selected theme, genre, or topic of interest, in collaboration with a branch librarian. Select meeting dates in collaboration with library staff. Set up and break down the discussion space. Help participants obtain a copy of the next book, if necessary. Greet participants and lead them in a respectful and engaging discussion of the current book, using book discussion questions obtained from reliable sources. Help library staff to promote group by dropping off library promotional materials to local businesses and non-profit organizations. Input information about library programs into local online media calendars. Book Club: Select 6 books and meeting dates for a year Mini Club: Select 3 books and meeting dates for a year Physical Demands: Occasionally lift tables and chairs up to 20 lbs. Qualifications: Enjoys talking with and helping others. Experience leading or participation in a book club preferred. Knowledge of library services, catalog, and website, or willingness to learn. Must be able to commit to a consistent meeting schedule and selected dates. Share information about the library at places you know or reach out and make new contacts using lists provided by the library. Drop off library promotional materials to local businesses, government offices, and non-profits. Input information about library programs into local online media calendars. Make phone calls to organizations to find out if they would be interested in receiving information or scheduling a library visit. Share library stories and information on social media, like Facebook and Instagram. Qualifications: Knowledge of library services, catalog, and website. Enjoys talking with and helping others. Help people find their way around the library. Greet them as they enter. Direct them to the area of the library or resource they are seeking, referring questions to staff as needed. Answer questions about the building and current programs or activities. Help people use the self-check machines and look up items in the catalog. Hand out library card applications, bookmarks, brochures, surveys, and give-a-ways. During down times, shelve and straighten materials and fill book displays near the entryway. Physical Demands: Continuously stand and walk for up to two hours. Qualifications: Enjoys talking with and helping others. Knowledge of library services, catalog, and website. Skill in teaching others. Ability to adapt teaching style to people at all levels. Take the lead in hosting a movie matinee for adults held every week for one year. Identify engaging and diverse movies based on a selected theme, genre, or topic of interest, in collaboration with a branch librarian. Set up and break down the movie space. Greet participants. Help library staff to promote group by dropping off library promotional materials to local businesses and non-profit organizations. Input information about library programs into local online media calendars. Physical Demands: Occasionally lift tables and chairs up to 20 lbs. Qualifications: Enjoys talking with and helping others. Knowledge of library services, catalog, and website, or willingness to learn. Must be able to commit to a consistent event schedule and selected dates. Movies will be held weekly on Thursday or Friday afternoons at 2pm. Greet families with a smile and a ‘hello!’ and serve as a friendly face in the neighborhood. Gently remind people of the town rules, assist staff in keeping the buildings clean and tidy, and be a positive and engaging presence in Penn’s Little Village. Knowledge of library services, catalog, and website. Skill in teaching others. Help staff prepare for large programs attended by 25-250 people. Set up and break down room. Greet people as they arrive and help them find seats. Serve as host or monitor during programs. Answer questions about the event. Distribute handouts and evaluations.
