Reading List for Juneteenth

June 15, 2025

In observance of this holiday, all library branches will be closed Thursday, June 19, 2025

A world of knowledge is at your fingertips whenever you visit the library. Providing free access to resources like books is an important part of what we do at Bucks County Free Library. And a fun part of what we do at BCFL is put together themed book lists for you!

As a federally-recognized holiday since 2021, BCFL will be closed on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Of course, we don’t want you to miss out on our library offerings! In fact, we’ve put together a list of books for you to checkout in celebration of Juneteenth.

  • “High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America” by Jessica B. Harris
  • “We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy” by Ta-Nehisi Coates
  • “Black Ghost of Empire: The Long Death of Slavery and the Failure of Emancipation”
  • “Surrounded: America’s First School for Black Girls, 1832” by Wilfrid Lupano
  • “Dangerous Learning: The South’s Long War on Black Literacy” by Derek W. Black
  • “The Warmth of Other Suns” by Isabel Wilkerson
  • “The Underground Railroad: A Novel” by Colson Whitehead
  • “A Black Women’s History of the United States” by Daina Berry and Kali Gross
  • “Juneteenth is” by Natasha Tripplett
  • “Build a House” by Rhiannon Giddens
  • “The Juneteenth Cookbook: Recipes and Activities for Kids and Families to Celebrate by Alliah L. Agostini

If you’d like to learn more about Juneteenth, we encourage you to visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s story, “Our American Story – Juneteenth.”
