Non-fiction helps us explore the world around us and the people who contribute to it. As we near the end of 2022, Bucks County Free Library staff weigh in on their favorite adult non-fiction titles released this year.
These staff picks and more are also available as e-books in the cloudLibrary app.
Agent Josephine: American Beauty, French Hero, British Spy by Damien Lewis
Chosen by Renee, Collection Management
I knew Josephine Baker was a wonderful entertainer, but never realized how truly remarkable and amazing she was. This was one of the best non-fiction books I’ve read recently. It’s thoroughly researched with documented sourcing, and is well written. (I’ve noticed a trend in some non-fiction…a lot of unsourced dialog, leading me to wonder how much was accurate and how much was imagined by the author.) The book spans Baker’s life but focuses primarily on her activities during the war years. Thank you to the author for bringing attention to this incredible woman.
I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy
Chosen by Jullian, Perkasie branch
Former actress and iCarly star Jennette McCurdy gives an uncensored, honest look into her early life as a child actor. Like many people, I grew up watching her on Nickelodeon, so the name alone attracted me. Her rocky relationship with her mother, acting, and “The Director” are given the spotlight. Reading this book has changed my view of certain topics and confirmed the feeling of relief when you’re finally free from an abusive figure. Anyone who grew up during the 2000s era of TV will enjoy this book; the rush of nostalgia is heavy in this one. When my friends ask for recommendations, this is the first book I think of.
The Nineties: A Book by Chuck Klosterman
Chosen by Justin, Yardley-Makefield branch
Everything Klosterman writes is so clever and hilarious and thought provoking. He’s one of those writers where I look forward to everything he puts out – and a great podcast guest to boot!
Tell Me Everything: The Story of a Private Investigation by Erika Krouse
Chosen by Katherine, Yardley-Makefield branch
People have always told Erika their secrets — even when she hasn’t asked. She just has a trustworthy face. As an adult, she puts this unusual “talent” to use as a private investigator. Part true crime and part memoir, Krouse is unflinching in her examination of her own motives and those she interviews. A truly captivating memoir. With this one, you might be getting more than you bargained for!
The United States of Cryptids: A Tour of American Myths and Monsters by J. W. Ocker
Chosen by Brianna, Levittown branch
J.W. Ocker travels across the country exploring America’s most famous cryptids, including Bigfoot and Mothman. I was immediately drawn to this book because of how much I love cryptids and the supernatural. I highly recommended it to anyone who wants to read more about monsters and aliens that could be lurking behind every corner…
