We’ve all been there. You’re in the middle of an amazing read, a daring jump is about to be made, when – BING – the doorbell rings. You frantically search for a bookmark so you don’t lose your place. But what to use?
In celebration of World Bookmark Day, here are some fun and resourceful bookmarks – and a few items to avoid.
Items that Make Good Bookmarks
Library receipt
When you check out items at the library, you can get a printed receipt showing what you borrowed. For many people, a library receipt is also an instant bookmark!
Greeting cards
With the holiday season behind us, you may have a stack of beautiful cards you don’t want to throw away. Keep a stack on hand to reuse as bookmarks. Be sure to avoid glittery cards!
Clean utensils
For those who need a quick solution in the kitchen, a clean utensil is the way to go. A spoon or fork can save your spot in your cookbook while you search for ingredients or tools. Just make sure to keep your book clear of bubbling pots and pans.
Playing cards
Children (and adults too) are known to leave their game pieces laying around. Picking up a playing card can help you keep your place until you can return to your book. Just don’t leave a “Get Out of Jail Free Card” in there for too long.
Ribbons and string
Whatever gift you’re giving, it’s always good to have some ribbon and string lying around. These colorful items can help brighten up your read, making it easier to find your place.
Items to Keep Out Of Library Books
Bills and other important mail
Bills, letters, invoices, and other important papers are often lying around, but you should avoid using these items as bookmarks. They might find their way to the library!
Sticky notes
They definitely stay in place, but it’s easy to rip the page when you remove them.
Flowers and plants
While pretty, these items may damage your library item. The paper in a book will absorb the liquid from the flower, causing the pages to warp. If you’re taking up flower pressing, use a heavy old book that you own.
Food wrappers
Candy or fast food wrappers might be a convenient placeholder while you find a different bookmark, we discourage the use of any food-based products – even for temporary placement.
Face masks
With so many face masks lying around the house, it’s easy to pick one up and leave in your library book. But this could spread unwanted germs, and you don’t want to scramble for a mask only to remember it’s in a library book you just returned.
